Hunting Knife Making

Hunting Knife Making

The first night starts with a tour of the workshop, getting you familiar with the tools and materials we will be using, a run through of workshop OH & S and a detailed breakdown of the days ahead. We will then move onto the design process: how to design a knife to fit your hand and your purpose, either hunting or camping.

The next day begins with a forging demonstration then it is your turn to get stuck into it. By lunch you will have your blade forged out ground, hardened and tempering in the oven.  After lunch, we work on the furnishings which are the handle and guard. Then hand polishing the blade and fitting of the furnishings.

The final day is shaping and fitting the handle, hand making the leather sheath and sharpening and polishing the blade. It doesn’t sound like much, but it will take the whole day. By the end of the course you will have one knife and sheath that you designed and made yourself to hang from your belt, ready to use in the field.

Anyone can do a course regardless of experience; we have everyone from lawyers, public servants to retired holiday makers and of course big burly boiler makers! The only restriction is age; you have to be 16 years and over for any knife making course, 13 years and over for the blacksmithing.

Course includes: tuition, materials, instruction and use of all tools, workshop consumables, personal protective equipment, insurance, morning and afternoon tea and a photo usb.

What to bring: your own lunch (refrigeration and microwave available), water bottle, fully enclosed shoes(preferably leather work boots), long pants.
